Culture and Cloth are tightly woven together, telling stories and giving meaning to those that wear them. There are 16 indigenous tribes in Taiwan, each favoring its own colors and pendants. The numerous tribes all feature a squared cloth system meaning they use a horizontal loom to weave the cloth, then add more material to create a more ornate and unified garment. The Han Chinese began arriving in Taiwan around 400 years ago, profoundly influencing these clothing styles in various ways that are very noticeable today. Though the garment Gillian is wearing is not an indigenous Taiwanese weave, I used the textures of chenille and chiffon to tell this story in a single image.
