The US alone sends about 21 Billion pounds of unwanted textiles every year to landfills in remote parts of the country and the world. Queens Native, Gillian Shieh, the host of the Midtown Swap event, was in town for a short while after riding out the pandemic in Taiwan. After spending so much time in a place that she had begun to love immensely, she built her swap around her friendships and clothes. Gillian, who created her brand The Sensible Fay, was surrounded by like-minded women who similarly had a heart for the incredible waste happening post-fashion. They just happened to be incredibly stylish as well as insightful. For them, and others organizing events like these in New York, Clothing Swaps are a simple way of extending the life of clothing that we cherish. I was able to capture the faces and the connection among friends that were not saying goodbye, but "see you later" to their mutual friend. Blend all of the warmth in the room with the good fortune of finding the perfect pair of jeans, or a perfectly patterned retro dress, and the best sort of portrait was born.
